Turkish eggs land for a second month as average import values fall

HMRC's July data shows Turkey shipping again, the average value of Ukrainian egg down to 91p a dozen at the border, and the whole import market shrinking.Turkish shell eggs arrived in the UK for a second consecutive month in July, with HMRC recording 19,900kg worth £22,657 under commodity code 040721, half the June volume but at a lower average value, £1.14 per kilo against £1.27, roughly 85p a dozen at the border. Importers declared the consignment as 352,000 eggs, an average of 56.5 grams, the same light profile as June's 57.7 grams, and the two month running total now stands at 60,000kg and £73,627, a little over four artic loads.Imports from the five countries that shipped in July fell 23 per cent on June to 2,102 tonnes, with every country down. Poland halved to 138,200kg, its fourth consecutive monthly fall from a March peak of 514,003kg, Spain dropped 43 per cent to 122,367kg, Belgium fell 26 per cent to 115,707kg, Ukraine eased 11 per cent to 1,705,414kg, and the Netherlands, which sent 110,181kg in June, recorded nothing at all. Egg demand is seasonally weak in high summer, so some of the fall in both volume and value may be seasonal.

Ukrainian egg landed at £1.21 per kilo in July, roughly 91p a dozen, down from £1.51 in June and 46 per cent below its March peak of £2.23, its cheapest month of the year. Turkish egg fell to £1.14, Spain to £1.99 and Belgium to £2.05, whilst Poland moved the other way, up to £2.60. Commodity code 040721 does not distinguish production system, so any of these consignments could be free range, barn, caged or organic, and the data labels them only as fresh hens' eggs in shell. A fall in a country's average value can therefore reflect a change in what is being shipped as well as a change in price. Turkey's declared egg weights, 57.7 grams in June and 56.5 grams in July, show the same profile both months, so its comparison is the closest to like for like.The 25p per kilo tariff on Turkish egg took June's £1.27 to £1.52 duty paid, level with Ukraine's June figure. In July the Ukrainian price fell further than the tariff gap, and duty paid Turkish egg at £1.39 now sits above tariff free Ukrainian egg at £1.21.Turkey's declared egg counts pass the weight check in both months, whilst Ukraine's and Poland's fail it in every month of 2026, so the figures here rest on the audited mass and value columns.Turkey has now shipped in two consecutive months, at a lower average value in the second than the first. HMRC publishes the August figures in mid October. All trade figures are HMRC uktradeinfo, commodity code 040721, and the prices are border values before duty, the declared value divided by the declared weight. Pence per dozen is the price per kilo multiplied by 0.75, because a dozen eggs weighs 750 grams at the 62.5g trade convention, and these are what the eggs cost landed at the border, before duty, haulage and margin, so they are wholesale entry prices and no guide to a shop price.
